Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
Is the first visit free?
Yes. Your first visit is free and includes an assessment of your garage, a discussion of your ideas and an initial quote range for the project.
What can I convert my garage into?
Popular choices include in-law and guest suites, home gyms, golf simulator rooms, home offices, home theatres, bars and entertainment lounges, wellness studios and luxury automotive garages. If you have a different idea, we’re happy to explore it with you.
What makes a garage suitable for conversion?
A garage already has much of the structure in place, including a foundation, floor structure or concrete slab, framing and a roof. This provides a starting point for creating a new usable space. We inspect these elements to determine their condition and what upgrades are needed for your intended conversion.
Can any garage be converted?
Most garages can be transformed, but the condition of the slab, framing, roof and drainage, along with local zoning, affects what is practical. We assess these during your free visit and explain your options.
Can a detached garage be converted?
Often, yes. Detached garages can make excellent offices, studios, gyms or guest suites. Servicing, such as electrical, water and heating, and municipal rules for the property will shape the plan.
Can I convert only part of my garage and keep the rest for parking or storage?
Yes. Many homeowners finish one bay as a gym, office or hobby room and keep the other for a vehicle or storage, with a proper wall, insulation and door between them.
Is converting a garage more practical than building an addition?
Often it is. Because the foundation, walls and roof already exist, a garage conversion can create a new room with less excavation and structural work than an addition. The right choice depends on your property and how you plan to use the space.
Can you show me what the finished garage will look like before construction?
Yes. During planning we work through the layout, finishes and details with you, so you have a clear picture of the finished space before any construction begins.
Cost, Permits & Timing
How much does it cost to convert a garage in Ontario?
Cost depends on the size and condition of your garage, how you plan to use it and the level of finish. A space with a bathroom, kitchen or specialized features costs more than a finished open room. After your free visit we provide an initial quote range for your project.
Do I need a permit to convert my garage in Ontario?
Most conversions involving structural, plumbing, electrical, HVAC or living-space changes require a building permit. Requirements depend on your property, municipality and scope of work, and we can help determine what is required.
Do you handle permits?
Convert My Garage can manage the permit applications, approvals and associated fees. If you prefer to deal directly with your municipality, we can guide you through the process. Your quote will explain the responsibilities and permit costs.
Can I legally convert my garage into living space?
In many cases, yes, but zoning, building code requirements and municipal rules on parking and additional living space vary by property. We review these early so your plans are realistic before design begins.
How long does a garage conversion take?
Garage construction generally takes 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the project. Design, planning and permit approval take additional time and depend on the project requirements and your township or municipality.
Does converting a garage add value to my home?
A well-designed, properly permitted and finished conversion can add usable living space and appeal. The effect on value depends on your home, your area and the quality of the work, so we focus on spaces that are built properly and finished to a high standard.
In-Law & Guest Suites
Can I convert my garage into an in-law suite?
Yes. We design premium, self-contained suites with comfortable living and sleeping areas, a bathroom and kitchenette or kitchen, and a private entrance. Requirements for living space depend on your property and municipality, and we help confirm what is required.
Can I create a private suite for aging parents or family?
Yes. A garage suite can give parents, adult children, guests or a caregiver their own private, comfortable space close to the family. We can plan for accessibility, step-free entry, wider doorways and quality finishes from the start.
Can a garage conversion include a bathroom or kitchen?
Yes. Bathrooms, kitchenettes and full kitchens are common, especially in suites and entertainment spaces. We assess water supply, drain connections and venting during your free visit.
Gyms, Golf & Entertainment
Can I convert my garage into a golf simulator?
Yes. We plan the ceiling height, room dimensions, screen and enclosure, flooring, lighting and wiring so the space works well for play and entertaining.
How much space do I need for a golf simulator?
Ceiling height is usually the deciding factor, since you need room for a full swing. Width and depth also matter for the hitting position and screen. We measure your garage and recommend whether it suits a simulator and how to make the most of it.
Can I turn my garage into a luxury home gym?
Yes. We design gyms with durable rubber or specialty flooring, mirrors, upgraded lighting, ventilation and climate control, and we confirm the floor is suitable for heavy equipment.
Can I convert my garage into a home office?
Yes. A garage office can give you a quiet, separate place to work, with insulation, sound control, good lighting, reliable heating and cooling and dedicated electrical and data wiring.
Can I turn my garage into an entertainment room?
Yes. Home theatres, bars, games rooms and lounges are popular choices. We plan the sound, lighting, seating, wiring and any plumbing so the room is comfortable for hosting year-round.
Luxury & Finished Garages
Can you renovate my garage while keeping it as a garage?
Yes. We can create a finished garage with insulated, drywalled walls, upgraded flooring, lighting, heating and custom storage while keeping it fully usable for vehicles.
Can you create a luxury garage or automotive showroom?
Yes. We design showroom-style garages with premium flooring, display lighting, finished walls, climate control, EV charging and custom cabinetry to showcase and protect your vehicles.
Can you add custom cabinetry, storage and upgraded lighting?
Yes. Custom cabinetry, wall storage systems, workbenches and layered lighting can be included in any garage project, whether it’s a full conversion or a finished garage.
Can you build me a garage if I don't already have one?
Yes. Convert My Garage can help with new garage construction as well as garage transformations. We can help take the project from initial design and planning through construction and the finished interior.
Can you build attached and detached garages?
We can evaluate attached and detached garage options based on your property, zoning, intended use and design goals.
Comfort & Construction
How do you heat and cool a converted garage?
Depending on the space and how you plan to use it, options may include in-floor heating, an overhead gas heater, ducting from your existing furnace or a ductless mini-split system that provides both heating and air conditioning. We discuss suitable options during your free visit.
How should a garage conversion be insulated?
Walls, ceiling and often the floor need proper insulation and air and vapour control to meet code and stay comfortable through Ontario winters. The right approach depends on the garage structure and how the space will be used.
What flooring works best in a finished garage?
It depends on the use. Polished concrete and epoxy coatings suit finished and showroom garages, rubber flooring suits gyms, and insulated subfloors with vinyl plank, engineered wood or tile suit living spaces and suites.
Do I have to remove my existing garage door?
Not always. For living spaces the door is often replaced with an insulated wall and windows. For gyms, studios or finished garages, you may keep it or upgrade to an insulated or glass door. Some uses may require changes under local rules.
